Thought Field Therapy (TFT)
and how it works

Although discovered 25 years ago, Thought Field Therapy® (TFT) is a relatively new energy meridian therapy. TFT is a radical departure from current psychotherapy methods.

Dr Roger Callahan, a Californian clinical psychologist with over 40 years experience, discovered a way of removing the root cause of negative emotions and trauma and with a very high degree of effectiveness. TFT was developed by drawing concepts from Eastern medicine, Applied Kinesiology and modern science. It was only after many years of research and testing, and when Dr Callahan was absolutely sure that TFT would produce the results stated, that he brought TFT in to the public domain.

TFT can successfully treat all kinds of emotional trauma resulting from:

  • accidents
  • natural disaster or terrorism
  • violence and crime
  • domestic abuse/child abuse
  • suicide of a loved one
  • bereavement/grief
  • exposure to war situations
  • PTSD
  • fears, phobias, anxiety, anger, depression, guilt
  • addictive urges (client must be motivated to self-treat)

TFT is non-invasive, drug-free technique.

Hundreds of therapists worldwide report general success, as well as no known harm resulting from the treatment.

TFT is the natural way to eliminate negative emotions. The results are rapid and effective. Most people see a reduction or elimination of their problems in minutes. TFT does not utilize hypnosis, cognitive behavioural therapy, desensitization, reprocessing or any of the common methods currently used.

The advantage of this technique is that the person is not required to discuss their problem - something that may have discouraged them from seeking treatment.

They also do not need to believe that the therapy will work for it to be effective.

Another big advantage of TFT is that the person is taught in a therapy session how to self-administer TFT. This means that they retain the skills and it also minimises their visits to the therapist making treatment very effective, rapid, long-lasting and cost-effective.

TFT works on the meridian system (a series of electric or electromagnetic circuitry throughout the whole body). Dr Callahan believes it is the fundamental control system for negative emotions. The meridians appear to act as a governing force in healing and growth – if these are out of balance healing cannot take place.

Psychological Reversal

Dr Callahan’s discovery that psychological reversal (a reversed polarity of the body’s electrical system) blocks an otherwise successful treatment from working meant that once this was corrected with TFT the success rate of the treatments increased.

A TFT Treatment

The first step in the treatment is to determine the degree of distress. The person assesses the degree of upset when they think of their problem on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the worst possible upset and 0 being none at all). We call this a "SUD", meaning Subjective Unit of Distress.

Dr Callahan devised the treatment sequences over about 20 years of research and development.

It is extremely important that the person being treated ‘tunes in’ to their particular ‘upset’. Thinking of their problem activates the thought field associated with it. Then they are asked to tap gently with two fingers in specific sequences (algorithms) on meridian points on the hands and upper body.

By tapping on the specific meridian points, the perturbations (upsets) in the thought field are eliminated (there may be several perturbations and more than one thought field involved).

After a successful TFT treatment the person becomes relaxed and heart rate is normalised. When they think of the previously upsetting, traumatic event they can do so without emotional upset. Resolution can be so quick that the client ‘forgets’ they ever had a problem in the first place – we call this the Apex Problem.

The brain is in inertia and tries to understand why previously there was tremendous upset (often for many years) and in the space of a few minutes the upset is removed.

TFT is very powerful and complements other techniques and methods. There have been no instances of TFT causing harm to anyone in 25 years.
