REASON

In these times of increased potential for trauma brought about by terrorist activities as well as the issues raised by industrial and traffic accidents or physical assault and even the occurrence of natural disasters therapists have a greater need to be able to intervene before traumatic stress or post traumatic shock can affect the emotional well-being and recovery of people who have been exposed to life changing events. This seminar enables therapists who are not working directly with the uniformed or rescue services to utilise the process for the benefit of members of the public. In addition counsellors working with the uniformed or armed services will find this seminar a highly effective illustration of the seven-stage model that will enable them to set up and use the process in their own environment.

THEORETICAL MODEL

There have been several intervention methods developed; the one that has proven to be effective in the greatest number of traumatic situations is the Mitchell and Dygrov seven-stage model. This process was originally developed to act as an interventionary activity enabling members of the armed forces and rescue services to remain efficient and not encounter the debilitating effects of Post Traumatic Shock or Stress. As outlined in the reason above, this process can also be utilised to help members of the public who have experienced life-changing events. Delegates will learn how to use the debriefing model in this form in addition to group debriefing skills.

AIMS

The CrID seminar delivered by Bill Bliss teaches the seven-stage model and identifies how it can be utilised by a wide variety of therapeutic practitioners on a one to one or group basis. The course is available to any therapist with counselling experience even if this is not their main theoretical approach. Knowledge of counselling skills will enable the therapist to ask open questions and, using the empathic rapport of counselling, be capable of developing further effective questions that may be utilised at a later date.

PROCESS

Delegates will understand the principles of pattern matching and emotive processing. Including the 3F response to danger. They will then become conversant with the description of Post Traumatic Shock and P T Stress as provided by the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual IV. This will enable all students to provide an effective written report if required. Following on from this the students will learn the 7 stage process of Critical Incident Debriefing and finally how it can be integrated into their practice. Included in this part of the seminar is how to work as a debriefing team in order to be capable of working with rescue service personnel should the need arise.
